Detroit VA Re-brand
‘23

Overview:The College for Creative Studies (CCS) and the John D. Dingell Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) aim to establish a cooperative relationship with the goal of developing a comprehensive re-brand for the VAMC by Fall 2023. This initiative, led by CCS group members including myself, Kyra Bowman, Michael Johnson, and Bryan Henry, seeks to align the VAMC's local brand with the core values and visual identity of the Federal Branding for Veterans Affairs, fostering mutual benefit and support between the organizations.

My group started by researching the different brand identities for different Non-profits that either work with the VMAC or is related to healthcare. From there, we gathered inspiration for the areas that we would design. We eventually decided upon the heart symbol. which signified that each heart was someone who is a part of the VA community and how the community comes together to help people through their hardships.

Showcasing a Collection

Overview:Documenting real-world objects in digital environments alters our perception and interaction with them, transforming them into virtual representations. The context shift influences their meaning, while digital platforms offer dynamic presentation options. For instance, when designing a website to showcase a collection of Funko Pops, rather than opting for a conventional display, the choice was made to initially show only silhouettes, with color revealing upon mouse hover. This unconventional approach engages users in a more interactive and visually stimulating experience, allowing for closer examination upon click.
Software:Figma, Photoshop, Lightroom
Process
For this project, I started researching different collection sites, along with websites like Amazon. The sites were often cluttered with information. I wanted to see how the collection sites would appear if the clutter was eliminated. I liked the result and decided to use silhouetted figures to create a journey for the user where all the detail is hidden and only revealed when the user hovers over the silhouette.
Type Collage Poster

Overview:This project builds upon the previous IMAGE + TYPE STUDIES initiative, focusing on creating collages to explore layering, composition, and typographic integration with various elements. Starting with smaller collages, the scope expanded to designing two posters sized 24 x 36 inches each. The objective was to convey the concept of the creative versus the mechanical across the two posters, with the left poster emphasizing creativity and the right poster representing mechanical elements, although the mechanical side presented challenges in composition and cohesion within the overall system.

Software:Photoshop, Lightroom
Process

For this project we started by collecting different pictures and objects that related to the theme. After collecting we started by collaging 40 different smaller collage posters then I took parts of those along with new assets to create the final 24x36 posters you see above.
Designer + Context

Overview:The objective of this project was to research, outline, and creatively present information about a chosen designer, in this case, Saul Bass, utilizing print, motion, or interaction to educate the class about their significance. After researching Bass's personal life and design career, images of his work were collected to inform the design process. Ultimately, the project culminated in the creation of a set of five posters, with a primary focus on Bass's roots in the Bauhaus movement and his contributions beyond title sequences, though challenges arose in integrating surrealist elements relevant.

Software:Illustrator

Process
For this project I started by selecting a designer and researching, not just his history in the world of design, but what influenced him and his work. From there I created a visually pleasing but informative method to showcase their work. I chose to pay a nod to his film career by highlighting the different movie posters he designed. The series of posters start with Bass’s origins with the Bahaus movement. As you see each poster depicts a journey in his design career.

Overview:The objective was to redesign John Maeda's book "Laws of Simplicity" into a 96-page format, employing a similar approach used in a previous 16-page book project. Utilizing styles in Adobe InDesign facilitated the creation process with minimal issues. Challenges primarily arose in managing the grid system and layout adjustments, as modifications to the grid would disrupt the layout and automatically alter the book's structure within the InDesign program.

Software:InDeisgn, Illustrator
Process
For this project i wanted to represent the text in terms of a visual sound wave. With that idea in mind, I created a sound wave like line throughout the book where the type would either be at or below the line. From there, I tested different text layouts, making sure they would align. I also employed differing text heights, with the intent of creating interest while still working within the sound wave theme.
